Proper Disposal and Collections

Super Sites

The District operates several facilities in Franklin County where any District resident may bring common household hazardous waste items -- such as used motor oil, antifreeze, and oil-based paint -- for disposal. These "Super Sites" are open year-round. Please click the link for details about what is accepted, as well as information about locations, contact information, and hours.

One-Day Hazardous Waste Collection

Once a year the District holds a comprehensive Household Hazardous Waste collection at two locations in the District. The collection is typically held in the fall. Our next collection will be held on September 24, 2022. Pre-registration is required for this event.

Pioneer Valley Hazardous Waste Collections: 2022 Schedule

The District has reciprocal arrangements with other municipalities in the Pioneer Valley which hold Household Hazardous Waste collections during the year. If you are a District resident and unable to attend the September 24, 2022 collection, you have access to a minimum of six other collection events. Please check this link to see if one of the other collections this year is feasible for you. Registration is required to attend any of these events! Contact Jan at the District office: 413-772-2438.

Safely Transporting your Household Hazardous Waste

  • Keep HHW in its original container. If you have used a different container, label it. Make sure lids are fastened securely.
  • Place containers in a plastic bin or box with a lid, and keep them from tipping or leaking.
  • Keep HHW out of the passenger compartment of your vehicle and away from children and pets. If transporting HHW in a truck, secure the load with ties to prevent the load from shifting.
  • Do not mix different types of HHW in the same containers.
  • Do not tape fluorescent tubes or bulbs together, and when possible, transport them in the original box to prevent breakage. Do not break.

NEDT (New England Disposal Technologies): Year-round collection of HHW

If you're not able to wait for one of the collection dates listed above, there is a year-round hazardous waste disposal facility at NEDT in Westfield, MA. This facility accepts a wider range of wastes than the District's "Super Sites" (described at top of this page). NEDT is open Mon., Wed., and Sat., 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For pricing, directions, and other info, visit www.nedt.org.
