Franklin County, Massachusetts
District operates several facilities
in Franklin County where any District resident may bring common
hazardous waste items -- such as used motor oil, antifreeze, and
oil-based paint -- for disposal. These "Super Sites" are open
year-round. Please click the link for details about what is accepted,
as well as information about locations, contact information, and hours.
Hazardous Waste Collection
Once a year the
holds a comprehensive Hazardous Waste Collection day at two locations in the District. The
is typically held in the fall. Our next collection will be held on September 21, 2019. Pre-registration is required for this event.
Pioneer Valley Hazardous Waste Collections: 2019 Schedule
The District has reciprocal arrangements with other entities in the
Pioneer Valley which hold Household Hazardous Waste collections during
the year. If you are a District resident and unable to attend the September 21, 2019 collection, you have access to a
minimum of six other collection events. Please check this link to see if one of the
collections this year is feasible for you. Registration is required to
attend any of these events!
Safely Transporting your Household Hazardous Waste
NEDT (New England Disposal Technologies): Year-round collection of HHW
- Keep HHW in its original container. If you have used a different container,
label it. Make sure lids are fastened securely.
- Place containers in a plastic bin or box with a lid, and keep them from
tipping or leaking.
- Keep HHW out of the passenger compartment of your vehicle and away from
children and pets. If transporting HHW in a truck, secure the load with ties to
prevent the load from shifting.
- Do not mix different types of HHW in the same containers.
- Do not tape fluorescent tubes or bulbs together, and when possible,
transport them in the original box to prevent breakage. Do not break.
you're not able to wait for one of the collection dates listed above,
there is a year-round HHW disposal facility at NEDT in
Westfield, MA. This facility accepts a wider range of wastes than the
District's "Super Sites" (described at top of this page). NEDT is open
Mon., Wed., and Sat., 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. For pricing, directions,
and other info, visit www.nedt.org.
The District offers guidelines for disposal of unwanted medications.
